Dead rhubarb crown
« on: June 01, 2009, 18:53 »
Any ideas whats killed my tub of rhubarb. They all just died on me quite quickly. I've dug up the crowns and they all break in half very easily, have yellow centres with orange round the edge and are full of worms. I've heard of four other people who have had their rhubarb just go on them . Any ideas - I will post a pici? thanks

Could be honey fungus.  It's hard to tell from the picture.  It doesn't look well at all.

Rhubarb doesn't have too many problems, but those it does will hang around in the soil.  Next year buy some new crowns and move them well away from this patch.

I agree it doesn't look well  :(

Doubt it's honey fungus - can't see any signs of bootlaces or the final flush of fungus.

Could it have simply got too wet and cold in the pot and rotted off?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

No I don't think its suffered from the elements - it has produced stalks so far this year, them it was almost overnight that the thing just died.

I've had another look at the crown again - still full of worms, but there is a kind of clear geletanous gunk round the edges too. No sign of fungus tho.....unless fungus grows from the gel
