They certainly can'y fly that high, but I suppose they could parachute in on a gust of wind! :D
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It is true that they cannot fly particularly well over a few feet, but they can still walk.  Like most flies, walking up a vertical surface is not too difficult for them, but I'm not sure they will walk several feet vertically (those who know better may be able to correct me)

Like DD says, they can be blown in on a gust of wind though.

I would rather 6 feet of brickwork around my carrots than 3 feet of enviromesh anyday though.  Both would be better.

I pulled 2 of my early Nantes and they were ok-ish. One had 2 small woodworm like holes in but there was nothing inside. Is this a sign of carrot fly ?

Because  of fly I grew carrots in pots on the upper staging in a greenhouse this year. Pulled them yesterday and most had been eaten by fly. I don't think I'll bother again.

Carrot fly show as black thread-like marks on the side of the carrot. Sounds like something else.

Charlie

Try growing them high, but outside, a greenhouse would be too hot for them.

Was it carrot fly or something else.

If you cut out the black marks, the rest is OK. They can go quite deep though.

Of course if you like eating grubs, you needn't bother!

I've grown carrots this year in an old metal water tank approx 3'6" high and a few I pulled today have been attacked by carrot fly (last week they were ok). I've also got some in a bed surrounded by debris netting and so far they are untouched.

So from my experience it's hit-and-miss relying on the fly's lack of flying power.

Next year I'll hopefully be growing them in a polytunnel (that I've yet to build) ... unless someone tells that doesn't work either.
