Growing grapes
« on: May 28, 2009, 09:23 »
Does anyone here grow grapes in their allotment ?

I am thinking about putting some all the way round the edge of our plot as a kind of fence / border.

I have a sunny position (a hill facing south) thats fairly dry and acid soil (we have had problems with clubroot).

I was tempted to try those box plants you find in sainsburys but I didnt want to spend much.

I have one in the back garden - in a raised border. I planted it last year and it grew ok, this year it's just started to grow a load of new growth. I'm not expecting it to give me grapes as I think they tak a few years to get established? It seems to be happy where it is but I know a few folks who grow them in the back of their greenhouse's on their allotment and allow them to grow along the inside of the apex - looks cool! (Think I may try another in the greenhouse!!)
