A couple of questions.

Can you grow a type of grape that can be both eaten and used to make wine? or is it best to grow two types.

I'm just tucking in to a bottle of Local wine (10 miles away) and it's really good, aparently we share similar soil to the champagne region, so i thought i could give it a go.

Can you buy vines ready to plant and how long before i get a good crop.

We have a grape vine in our back garden. It's been there for around four years now without fruiting. I did a bit of research and I found out you have to do some strict pruning to manipulate the vine to flower and bear fruit. I think a sweet grape may be ok for wine as it needs the sugar to turn in to alcohol. It will need a certain amount of acidity though I think for flavour.

You can eat wine grapes, the interior is sweet but the skins are tough, which is the main reason why they are bred as such...the skins give the wine its colour and flavour. You might find wine grapes not as nice for general eating. Best to go with a specific  eating grape, which is much easier to prune than wine grapes which as said above, is very specific to get crops out.
