Vegetable spagetti
« on: May 26, 2009, 11:51 »
Hi, I grew some spagetti squash last year but most of the fruit just turned soggy and dropped of. Is this due to over watering. Ron. ???

I've never grown these particular sqaushes but last year hardly any of the pumpkins ripened  :wacko:because they were on the cold wet ground and just rotted ....... hope that helps.

This year I shall out a piece of stout cardboard or an old piece of wood under them to keep them dry underneath  ;)

I agree it was a bad season for squash last year,

The forecast for this year is a lot better with a lot more sun so I hope you are trying vegetable spaghetti and other squash again

No joke  :D

I can't see it on T&M's site but I think it looks like a regular butternut squash, with insides which look like spaghetti and can be cooked separately.  I'm not sure how much taste they have, but I wouldn't have thought it is any more difficult to grow than other squashes, still got time to start it off  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I was given one once.  You can bake the squashes whole and then fish out the stringy interior.  It only looks slightly like spaghetti and does not taste of much at all.

I don't grow them!

Cheers,

Gillie

We grew them one season when I was a kid.  Novelty value only IMHO, so we didn;t grow them again. Had to put loads of seasoning on the "insides", once fished out, to get any flavour.

I've read on the forums of people who rave about them, so don't let me put you off trying them!

For all who have not tried them, microwave for 12 minutes allow to cool and tease out the spagetti like flesh, add sliced onion, bacon and cheddar cheese.Return all to the skin, sprinkle with a little more cheese,  put in conventional oven 200 C for twenty minutes
 Mamma Mia!!!

for anyone considering trying spaghetti squash - it's a bit late to start seeds off now, fine if you can find a plant.

Like most squash they need a long growing season with plenty of sun to do well but can average 6 fruits per plant which is pretty good.

Agree they don't have much taste but neither does pasta!
Spaghetti squash is at least low carb

As a side dish it's great tossed with pesto - for a supper dish add cooked peas and salmon
