Hiya - one of the eggs layed this weekend had a weird texture on bits of it - little bumps.  It almost looked like sand!?

The shell itself is fine (ie not weakened or off colour) but just has this stuff on parts of it.

Any idea what it could be?  Should I be worried or is it just an over processed shell?

nothing to worry about mine have this from time to time - think its something to do with calcium.

Ok great, thanks - thought it might be... safe to eat I assume then?

Should I add something to their diet to improve calcium do you thinK?

One of my three girls has been laying eggs like this recently too.  They are all in the same run but she always lays a "rougher" egg.  Not sure there is much I can do about it because the other two lay really smooth ones and they have access to grit and shell all the time.  It doesn't seem to bother her but helps me identify who has laid!

This is nothing to worry about as it is just calcium depositing on the out side of the shell.  Colouration can change too from time to time.  Its what is inside that counts! Yummy.
