I sowed a row of beetroot in early April, which germinated quite well. They grew to about 1" high and stopped. Now the leaves are turning dark red - is there a problem or will they get going soon?

some crops the leaves will turn red, purple, if there is a drop in temperature.
once the weather warms up again they should start growing again, why yours haven't started growth again don't know.

We have had a prolonged spell of below average temperatures haven't we - as you say, perhaps the warmer weather we have now, plus some rain, will get them moving. I certainly hope so, they did badly last year as well. Yet I've always had good crops for years.

Ours have done just the same. It has been too cold for them. I hope they will start growing soon. I have to re-sow in the gaps where they have not germinated. We always end up with a good crop by autumn.
