Beetroot - is this a problem
« on: May 24, 2010, 20:31 »
Hello,
I have been planting beetroot Boltardy in succession since beginning of April.  The seedlings have all seemed to come up with marks on the leaves.  They are growing OK, should I be worried?
(PS I know the one on the right is a thistle.  We are plagued with them...

Thanks David, that's a relief!
They were very very slow to start with but seem to have really come on leaps and bounds this week.

You can  :D Either raw in salads, but I also love them crunchy when baked whole (leaves and root) in the oven

Ooh didn't know that: and we often roast ours - my elder daughter's favourite veg (apart from asparagus, but she's got to wait  another 2 years for that  :)).

So Peapod, do you just wash it and put it on a baking tray and bake it dry? Or do you add oil?  How long do you bake it for?

TIA

The marks are scars left by insect damage done in the centres of the plants when the leaves were tiny. The most likely culprits are beet flea beetle. The beet should grow away but the scars will expand as the leaves get bigger.
