Strawberries - alternatives to straw?
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:45 »
My strawbs are going to fruit soon so I'm going to need something to protect them from the damp soil. Anyone used anything other than straw? I've only got a few plants so getting a bale of straw seems a bit OTT.

You could try the local pet shops who often sell large bags of the stuff (rather than bales) for the guinea pigs etc.

What about supermarkets, they usually have a large pet selection.

You can buy strawberry mats that sit under the plants, though they can be a touch pricey.
I make my own out of the off cuts of weed control fabric, they work extremely well.
I have even seen some like foil/shiney type that allows the light to reflect back up from under the plant to help ripening.

This might be a silly question but does weed control fabric allow water to drain through it?

Would sawdust be any good?

Yes, weed control fabric does allow water through.

As for using sawdust as mulch for strawberries, I wouldn't because when sawdust gets damp, it stays very damp for a long time and any berries touching it are prone to going moldy faster. Straw actually lifts the berries away from the soil and lets air circulate.

Nice one Trillium, never thought of that, sometimes the obvious isn't obvious.

an old gardening book i read suggests using grass clippings to cover strawberry plants, tried it myself, certainly easier than straw
