Nocturnal slug hunts - do you do a head count?
« on: May 21, 2009, 21:50 »
Been out tonight, risking the midges, counted 89 slimey little beggers - all dispatched in salt water.

Should we have a competition?

wish I could play. We have a 'dusk curfew' at our site. Once the sun dips below the roofline we have to go home :(

would love to play out but seem to have a lack of slugs to play with  ??? not sure if it's down to the war games I played a few weeks ago where I sadly ha ha ha  got all the baby slugs before they grew up, or could it be the many many birds that pop in for a daily snack  anyhow not complaining although now I've posted this things are bound to change

I killed hundreds last year, went out at around 10.0pm "Lamping" with a pair of scissors. The remains are either cleared up by birds or other slugs, yes they are cannibals.

I have used Nematodes this year for the first time to control slugs and so far I am impressed, I have seen very few indeed and seen no slug damage on young plants. However the jury is still out on this treatment.
I wish there was a similar treatment for snails though!!

Austrian slugs, like Austrian people, are very partial to the local brew, so I use beer traps. It really works, but then, the beer really is very good here!

My first year on the night slug run I was getting 120 per night (slugs and snails)... now I only get around five or six...  the chickens LOVE them so I keep them in a yoghur pot until morning and give them as a special treat :tongue2: :tongue2:
As for putting them in a pond... Tried this in the beginning of my slug hunting, but it makes the water really pong

Not only does the water pong - if there are fish in the pond there's a risk of killing them too!  :(

My plot has relatively few slugs - or at least they do very little damage. In dry weather I "spot water" plants and aim to keep the rest of the ground dry. This discourages the slugs and reduces the need to weed.

In wetter weather I use slug bait as a precaution rather than lose valuable plants. Just a very few sprinkled around susceptible plants seems to do the trick.  ;)

Our garden at home gets the torch-light treatment but I use a half-moon lawn edging tool for slicing... The half-moon tool is great for launching sliced-slug into the flower-beds to avoid skidding on them the next morning when crossing the lawn.   :tongue2:  ::)

Being an exciting, invigorating and wildly exotic location to live it has become a local pass-time around here amongst some gardeners. It’s the highlight of our night-life! (That and Butlins a mile or so away – Which would you choose??  ::) )

Snows very little so it is the closest some of us non-jet-set get to skiing!  ;)
