I think night time torchlight slug hunting should be a national sport

I've got a wind up one! Don't think I can actually kill the slugs - might have to save them for the hundreds of chickens on the lotty  8)

Currently I'm collecting my slugs and chucking them behind my shed which was where I put a couple of frogs a few weeks ago.  I like to think they're feasting on them but somehow I doubt it.
Does anyone know of a humane way of killing the slugs you find as I just can't bring myself to chop them in half.

After hearing about this pastime, i initially thought great another reason for a nice walk to the plot of a summers warm evening.

But im with lobot on this one , incorperating in my evening a walk a killing frenzy would spoil it a bit.

So do most of you go cutting them in half?

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I have a jar of water with good tablespoon of salt and i put them in the water. The seem to expire instantly. There is no squirming. I used to cut them but i don;t like it much.

When the jar is full i just put them in the bin outside. Don't think the hens would like the salt.

I might try this method if I can live with the guilt. (Don't know why I feel guilty when they've eaten loads of my veg!)

I find bashing them with a big spade is quite humane. Works for me  :tongue2:

:D :D :D That's the start of a team then

This has nothing to do with planting by the moon but is equally (?) or even more effective!

There are three of us now - wind-up torches at the ready  ;)
Anyone else signing up to join?  8)

Perhaps we should have a thread all of our own

Methods so far:
The half-moon edging tool is quick and clean with the added bonus of being able to lift and flip to one side (no treading on and squishy bits under foot).

The spade method is equally effective and allows for tensions to be released (after all who ate all the plants!!)  >:(

Dropping gently into a jar of salt-water works, is cheap and allows for a head count / score.
Alcohol works too and might be a nicer way to go -  (drinking afterwards not compulsory)

Much nicer than chemical warfare (slug bait!) and environmentally friendly – even organic.

and can I also add that other advantages are:
. gives much needed stroll in the garden before bed another dimension
. allows you to see lots of moths
. lets you get your own back 1:1 on the s&s in a most organic fashion
Who else is up for this!!!??

I was using a bucket of salty water and didn't think I could chop them until I saw what they had done to one of my best chilli plants. The rage then took over and now I have no problems with it  ;)
