Mouldy paper pots?
« on: May 19, 2009, 14:14 »
So, I've been well happy with my sweetcorn going well in the paper pots but today I checked on them and they seem to be cultivating a white mould on them? I assume maybe it's because of the wetness?? Is this OK for the sweetcorn or do I need to do anything about it? They're about 3 inches high are they too small to plant out??

Definitely too much watering. Corn doesn't need this much at any stage. And spacing them out a bit helps both dry out the excess and the fungus.
Planting out time is whenever you feel you're past all the frosts in your own area. To be double sure, you can put some fleece over the planted out ones until it's definitely warm enough.

It doesn't seem to do any harm and disappears later :)

Just what I wanted to hear!  :D

This I'll move them apart on the tray and let them dry out a wee bit?

Paper pots always grow mould. It is the start of the process of the paper rotting down.

Keep the pots so that the outside is always damp. The roots should start to grow through the pot. They cannot do this if the pot is dry.

I keep mine pushed together or they dry out very quick.

so the mould is nothing to worry about. In fact it's all part of the process?

Some of mine have gone beyond the mouldy stage & have actual tiny toadstools growing on them.  Most likely the compost not the paper though I expect  ;)

The paper rotting is part of the process but you must always watch that it doesn't develop into damp off disease (a fungus) which can quickly take its toll on plants.

I reckon if you chit the sweetcorn (on kitchen paper) and then pop into paper pots they will be up & away before the developing paper-fungus could do any harm.

I started mine off on 9th May, put into paper pots on 13th May, and today (20th) they are a couple of inches high and I reckon I will start hardening off in a few days ready to plant out 1st week of June.
