Greenhouse cucumbers.
« on: May 17, 2009, 12:55 »
Hi Guys, hope you can help me on this one.
I've planted out my greenhouse cucumbers a couple of weeks ago.
The plants were about 200mm tall, variety Diana F1 in an unheated greenhouse.
One looked a bit poorly and subsequently collapsed after a week, fair do's. But now the other healthy one is looking limp. They've had plenty of water and an adjacent cuc is doing fine (Cystal Lemon) and another Diana still in the pot on the bench is fine.
Any ideas please before I plant another out?

Ah, sorry I wasn't very clear.
We've got a soil based greenhouse and they are planted inside.

You may well be right beansticks, the Mrs said it might be too cold. (hate it when she is right!)
I'll wrap up the woosies in bubblewrap at night and hopefully save whats left.

Thanks.
Dave.

are you watering too much ?

are you leaving the water inside greenhouse over night ,

cucs will not tollerate cold watwer straight from taps / butts ,

for now i would water every 7-10 days ,

once they are 18 inches high cover the base of cucs with 1/2 a barrow of horse manure and water with watering can through the manure, always rember to leave watering can overnight,

my cucs have been in 2 weeks, everythings going as planned ( f1 cucs telegraph)

Peter you're a star, in answer to your questions:
Probably yes (every day).
No, I'm not.
Ah, have been using water from the water butt.

Many thanks indeed. ;)

I plant my cucumbers on a slight mound so that water runs away from the stem, and I don't plunge-plant them up to the seed leaves (as I do for everything else) - so that the bit of stem left above soil is the original seed-to-seed-leaves bit, which is more tollerant of damp.

I wouldn't mulch the stem of my cucumber plants, but having said that I haven't tried it (too chicken!) so it may be just the answer.

I water my Cucumbers every day (still in 10" pots, in conservatory, will be planted out in a week or so into greenhouse soil). I would be surprised if pretty much everything in a greenhouse border didn't need watering every-other-day, or perhaps every-three-days if it is overcast.
