Weed supressing mulch
« on: April 02, 2007, 21:14 »
Where my new beds have been dug I have got hundreds of seeds germinating in  the soil, I got all the roots out but these must be annuals. I mean loads, it is like someone sprinkled seed in there.

Is there any sort of mulch i can put around my crops, particually the onions? Was thinking straw or bark but will it spoil the veg and stop it coming up? (They are already planted)

If you hoe them is it just knocking the tops off? Will they re root?

Keep doing it and they will die eventually. Sharpen your hoe with a file to make it easier.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

rotavate a few weeks before you sow at full depth then wait for about 3 weeks untill the weeds germinate then give it another rotavating but this time just skimming the soil and this will destroy any weed seedlings and sow your seeds then.
feed the soil not the plants

I tried something new this year......

I laid newspaper on the ground, covered it in sand to hold it down.  Soaked the lot.  Then punched holes through to plant the onion seedlings.

There is probably a sensible reason that this won't work.... but I thought it would cut out light and prevent germination of seedlings.  At least for a while.

So far so good, but they're only in about 10 days!
