holes in the Pak Choi
« on: May 14, 2009, 16:14 »
One of the few things that actually seem to be sprouting in my seed bed is Pak Choi but it does have little holes in the leaves?  Any ideas as to what it might be or how to minimise the danage?

Sounds like the small holes I have all over my lettuce, radish and cabbage.

The guys here suggested slugs.

I don't think it's slug damage 'cos they're tiny holes with a lot of space in between each one & they're not on the edges of the leaves.  I'd say it's definitely something snacking tho'

OMG - now they're banning organic pesticides!

Seems like I'm now going to have to make a Lawrence Hills's designed sticky, wheeled flea beetle device after all.

Definitely sounds like flea beetles.  Try and keep the ground clear (they love to hide under wood, stones or anywhere shaded and damp including under weeds.

Definitely dust with the dreaded derris.  The warning label alone should keep them away !!!

If you are not striving to be organic there are any number of treatments available.  Deffo sounds like flea beetle to me.

I'm not sure enviromesh would work, as I think they may already be in the soil?

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've found that regular hoeing among brassicas has stopped/reduced my flea beetle problems. Even when there's been no weeds to remove. The rain should have a positive effect as well.

That link was interesting although not sure that mustard is the favourite food of the flea beetles on my plot - I had loads of that growing & they never touched any of it - fussy b*****s.  Hopefully this rain will help a bit.
