any one else got tomatoes still only 4" high ?
« on: May 10, 2009, 10:52 »
I'm getting worried after reading posts about tomatoes 1 metre high already, mine are only 4" high, I sowed them early April in unheated greenhouse, they germinated very quickly and potted on into 3" pots but they now seem dormant.

The weather here in the north west has been mixed with some very cold days and equally some very warm sunny days

Could it be the compost?

Varieties are Gardeners Delight, Amature and Moneymaker

I'm considering going to a car boot sale and buying some bigger ones off someone!

Any thoughts anyone?

For an April sowing that seems OK to me.

Mine are various heights but the ones I sowed in April arn't that much bigger so wouldn't worry they will soon catch up.

No problem. Bear in mind their cousins the potatoes are about 4" tall.
There are taller ones but they will have been sown much earlier and grown in heat.

Nothing wrong with the compost. Don't feed then until the first truss has set. When the sunny weather returns, you will see them grow. Your varieties will grow very well in an unheated greenhouse.

Be wary of boot sales. They may have been grown in heat and will need hardening off.

Dont ask me why,but mine never even germinated.I have grown a different variety every year, this year was supposed to be Fantasio. In the end went to a nursery and bought Moneymaker, which are now about 15" high strong and healthy.£0,89p each

Glad to read this post, and feel reassured, because my tomatoes are about this high too! They germinated well (kitchen windowsill), and I potted them up ten days or so ago, and now they're in one of those 4 tier mini greenhouses outside - I hardened them off gradulally before letting them stay out overmight!

This week they seem not to have grown at all, but I thought this might be because they're busy making rots in their new pots, rather than making green growth?

yep this was my worry as they seem to have stood still for well over a week but I'm much reassured now I know it's not just me  :)  and I think they have perked up a bit today and grown a millimeter at least

I think Tomatoes "check" if the temperature falls below 10C (which it probably does some nights in a cold greenhouse).

Could you bring them into the house at night? (Mind you, the cold nights are pretty much behind us ... but Toms take a while to resume growing after they check)

don't worry - they will  romp away after they are put into place at the end of the month. So long as they are sturdy and have been hardened off you'll be astonished how much they grow in a very short period

We are doing two types of tomatoes, the cherry tomatoes are growing slowly but the San Marzano are growing really well.
It's all too much!

Mine are about 6" high, sown on March 18th so your toms are fine they'll soon catch up.
