"Tieing in" cucumbers and tomatoes
« on: May 24, 2010, 18:37 »
Hello,

I'm growing toms and cues in my unheated greenhouse and according to my grow your own book I need to tie them in soon.  Is it ok just to tie the stem periodically to a garden cane?  Or is it more complex than this?

Thanks

That'll work.
Or if you prefer, a LOOSE loop in softish twine round the stem as low as you can get (aim for below the first true leaves) and then spiral the twine round the stem and tie up above the plant.  As it grows, gently ease the new growth and leaves round so the twine spiral is continued.  Each vertical spiral should be not much tighter than 360 degrees in about 18" to 2ft.

I tie every 6"-8" and support any branches i want to keep. Old stockings or tights cut into 1" section are good for ties as they are soft on the plant and can be looped together or around the branches. :)

Thanks!  I have garden twine but I do like that tights idea.  Hamstergbert, not sure there's anything at the top of the greenhouse to tie the twine to, so reckon I'll stick to tying to a cane.

I will have to start "pinching out" stuff soon too I believe.  This is all a scary business for a newbie, petrified I kill things off!

Have you got a horizontal cane tied to all the vertical cane tops to stop them waggling about.  It`s best to have this wired to a cropped head bolt in a roof bar in a couple of places for added stability.
With luck you will have a big crop of toms hanging off this.
