Yellow Garlic Leaves
« on: May 07, 2009, 20:34 »
Might be a silly question (and apologies if it is) just had a look at my garlic and the leaves seem to be turning yellow.   They went in the ground in January, wondered if I should be fertilising them as isn't it a bit early for them to be ready?

Yea, mine are yellowing, especially at tips.  Planted early march in pots.  Added organic chicken manure pellets a few weeks ago to help them along.  I may be imagining it, but they're looking a bit better.

When mine looked like that I gave them a high nitrogen feed ( after finding some info on t'interweb that suggested it was the problem ), sorted them out no end ;)

This happened to me last year and I was left with VERY small bulbs(more like a clove) as the plants had died back by the end of may.....

It seems to be happening this year too so glad the topic has come up - I will try some chicken pellets to get the nitrogen up.

Thanks, added Nitrogen to the soil and hope that solves it.

By adding anything high nitrogen around Garlic may cause rust disease.  This will make the leaves turn yellow and eventually die, and will remain in the soil too so will affect a crop grown the following year (it will also affect onions and leeks too).

From the picture I cannot see any of the tell-tale spots, so it may be early in its first stage, or something else entirely.

Garlic is usually fairly trouble free (the tips of the plants are usually the only parts to show any damage - mine have turned slightly brown, but I think this due to the dry spell we are having.
