cucumbers
« on: May 09, 2009, 17:20 »
Dear Group Members,

I've just realised I've planted my cucumbers 30 cms apart (should have been 70) but confused because my book said dig a 30 cm sq hole). I visited a website that said cucumbers on stakes (which mine are) can be 30 cm apart. Is that right or do I have to dig them up and start again?

i'd try and give them a bit more space between.but wouldn't worry if it wasn't possible.you may run into probs later, regards air circulation between the plants.

Could you just take out alternate plants so they will then be 60cm apart and then transplant them.

But dig up a large rootball as cukes really hate their roots disturbed.

I'd leave them, if it was indoors, as you gotta prune and otherwise mutilate them for lack of space anyway, and I would leave them if it was outdoors as it doesn't matter where they grow to, a foot apart is enough to sum. :D

i would leave them too,

put up a good frame work of canes to support the plants

dont forget to mulch the cucs with plenty of horse manure,

just lay it on the plants as they get to about 1 foot high ,

then feed with tom feed every week,

and then water once a week too ,

we feed ours wednesday and water every saturday

Thanks for the tips.  I have planted these cucumber plants in previous years (at the right space of 70cm). They are not very bushy. They are supplied on canes.   I don't think these sort take up much space, so I'm surprised they require 70 cm.
