Putting the girls to bed at night !
« on: May 05, 2009, 13:07 »
This might seem like a silly question but being a prospective newbie, I am going to ask it anyway. I am sure you will indulge me. Assuming that my run is both fox and rat proof (see turf or earth earlier today) is it neccesary for me to shut the girls away every night? Will they not go in to roost at nightfall of their own accord? It's not that I mind tucking them up at night, but do I need to for any other reason than their safety. I am probably missing a very obvious reason but I can't see what it is.

I shut mine in to make sure foxy doesn't get them. Also to keep them out of a draught  :)

I would shut them up.  As compostqueen says because of the draught.  A hen coop should be well ventilated but not draughty, as this can cause health issues.

my girls do take themselves to bed every night, around 8.30 - 9'ish at the moment but I like to make sure they're all in and shut the door.   They free range in the garden all evening but make their way back to the run at dusk - clever girls  :)

I have to confess a couple of times I've forgotten to put my ladies to bed and yes they do tuck themselves up but oh my goodness the din in the morning.  From around 5.30am!!!!!!!!!!!!  Apart from all the reasons listed above there's also the fact that you could seriously hack your neighbours off!
