sweetheart cabbage
« on: May 02, 2009, 19:06 »
I have only ever grown winter cabbage, so treat me gently on this one.
If i wanted to grow the little sweetheart lettuce supermarkets are selling now (at £1 a time ) which variety would i sow and when
Have looked in catalogues and it looks like they have to grow all through winter to heart up....can this be right? Seems an awful long while for a tiny head of cabbage. Are there none to sow early in the year?
I have an 8 x 6 polytunnel i could sow in if it helps.
I sound like a newby :lol: ::)

Try Greyhound, they're the nice conical ones you see & are fast growers - hence the name.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

F1 Hispi is also fast growing and fantastic. Needs little space and little time - you'll be eating them this summer  :) Few outer leaves, it's all heart.

As an experiment I grew 4 x Hispi in  Poundland tubs, one in each corner. They were fantastic, & bigger than supermarket ones from Holland!

Ground grown were fab too.

I agree mum, £1 a cabbage is ridiculous. Sunday roast costs me £2 each week in cabbage alone

F1 Hispi & Greyhound are my favourite cabbages, both for growing and eating, you really won't be disappointed I promise ;)

I sowed a cabbage greyhound in Novemeber, just cos I was bored and had an "I wonder if" moment, and loads of different seed ... it actually lived and is a fair amount ahead of the rest ( can post a pic if you like ) .... this year I'm gonna get bored in september, assuming I remember (yay, that rhymes), bet it's ready by may ;)

You may wish to get more advice first, the other seeds I tried all died in the same experiment ... except the carrots, I'm the proud owner of 4 carrots ( out of about 100 ) :D

Hey...... it don't hurt to try :D i wouldn't hold you personally resposible if it didn't work, so no worries.
It's just that this is the time of year i want to eat em, so it's worth a go :)

If you want to eat cabbage now you can grow spring cabbage. Plant seeds in August, plant out a foot apart in September/October, harvest as greens now and hearted cabbage as they mature.

i wouldn't hold you personally responsible if it didn't work

Cool, that's a huge weight off my mind :D ... it may help you to know that the maximum approved load weight of a blonde's mind is about 0.002g per square mm ;) ... mind you, the only reason why the load weights of a mind are so precise is because of blondes :D

If you PM your address I'll hopefully remember to send you some seed in time ( I've got a fair few spare ), then you can have a play for free and I'll feel even less guilty than I do now ;)
