Extending my group of girls! Advice needed!
« on: April 28, 2009, 19:01 »
(sorry posted this on the wrong one before!!!)

I have two at the mo and have two more on order but I am now ordering a bigger second coop so was thinking of putting the two coops together with one large covered run out front and getting two extra girls... 6 in total!

Would they be Ok?

If I bought the new hens in!! 4 more! and just let them choose where they waned to roost at night? Or should I put them in he one I want them and keep them in for 24 hours??

What do we think? Any advice greatfull recieved!

Hi Sopho, sorry, I've not been on here long!  Just seen your message.  I think it's a matter of opinion.  We don't often put new girls in with old, but we did late last year, as someone actually bought some of my older laying hens because they wanted white birds and not the brown POL's I had, then I wanted to add to my layers, so I put 10 new girls in with the 11 older ones at night, in the same house and in the morning, there was a bit of arguing, but after a couple of days they all settled down nicely together.

But if you wanted to use both your houses, you may find they will all go into the one house, hopefully the larger one, then you can use the smaller house for emergencies.

Good luck with it all!!!

I imagine once the hens flock together (after the inevitably fighting) they will want to roost together - I'd recommend putting them in their respective houses, but even then, there's no guarantees it will work.

Interesting question, though - let us know how it goes  :)
