Seed planting
« on: April 26, 2009, 21:58 »
Hi guys

How is it best to plant your seeds, in a tray, in the ground or in those plug trays.

Ive had lots of different advice but the majority seem to say get some plug trays and put one seed in each and put in cold frame?

Thats a how longs a piece of string kind of question  for runners, sweetcorn and a few snips, sweetpeas etc I use paper pots. Tomato's are sown in a tray then transplanted on as are chillis peppers brassicas etc.
What specifically are you wanting to sow ???

You cannot as Richy says, cover all kinds of seed carte blache with one instruction.

Those people that told you this - do they put one carrot seed per plant plug?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Richy's being very modest. I use paper pots (a la Richy) for everything................... :) (sorry, apart from carrots, but i did do parsnips this way)
Toms etc i sow two or three seeds per paper pot then thin out to strongest one. The paper peels off from the sides nicely when it's time to pot up to a bigger pot.
Werks fer me as they say ......
Although i've just remembered i did my leeks last year a la DD mode which worked brilliantly. Gosh where would i be without this site ...............
So ignore all the above - i obviously don't use paper pots for everything!!!

I use a combination of pots, paper pots, trays and module trays.

Trays: I only use for things like radishes and salad crops which I just sow -> pamper -> pick  8)

I'm using paper pots for runners, French beans and sweetcorn which will be transplanted directly into the soil when ready, and when my munty frame is ready ;)

Everything else (toms, cucs, chilli, pepper, courgettes....) go in either individual pots or modules, modules and pots may get a few seeds sown in each but then thinned. This year I have sown a few seeds in pots with the intention to prick out into individual pots but... personally, I hate pricking out, out of all the jobs for the growing season pricking out is the one I have enjoyed the least so next year I will be using modules a lot more.

It's all too much!

Let us know what you want to grow and we can give you more specific pointers

I think the last posts from farmersue & gwark summed it up.

Different seeds - different methods & more than one method works for each seed.
