Dust Bath.
« on: April 26, 2009, 20:22 »
What should I use in the dust bath?

I was heard somewhere that white sand is best. I was thinking this was play pit sand, or kiln dried sand.

What does everyone else use?

Also, should I put it in the coop, or in the run?

Oh, all these questions I have, I must seem REALLY niave!

hi parson , i use an old shell shaped kiddies sand play pit and i filled it with play sand . the girls love it to death especailly my maran she never gets out of it   it does need refilling though not sure if they have ate most of it or its gone though the holes that are in the bottom as it was once a mini raised beds for flowers .

and i would say keep it under cover but not in the coop , i will be making my outdoor feed shelter larger so its going to go under there .

well it hasnt done mine any harm , another thing u can do is add some diatom to it as that will help agasint the lice { if they get any { and aslo maybe ad small handfulls if oyster shell grit to it as when they are picking though the sand they will get the shel as well.

:) What a great idea a kiddies sand pit, i never give that a thought. I have a small cast iron square container that i fill with the old soft soil from last yrs crops from my greenhouse, the girls go mad for it, but it's only small and all 4 hens try to get in it at once, well funny to watch, i have 2 bantams and 2 big brown hens. I will go look for a cheap second hand sand pit now, at least you can put the lid over and cover it from the weather when it's not in use. Wonderfull advice cheers me dears!
