Ants in the Greenhouse. Do I need to be worried ?
« on: April 25, 2009, 15:16 »
I've just found in the past few days that ants are crawling up the staging around the trays and pots and are on the floor in the Greenhouse.

Do I need to do anything if so, what ?

Anyone had any past expieriences with ants in a greenhouse or eating plants and veg outside?

I'm going to try splashing hot water about in there on the floor is this any good ?

Thanks

if it was me I would try and get rid of them, I dont like ants

Boiling water on the nest should shift them, or a line of ant stop accross the door

I do like ants, but not in the greenhouse. I don`t think they intend to damage plants but when making nests they remove all the soil from around the plant roots so they have to go. Nippon ant killer does the trick.

ok thanks all,

I read on the net somewhere this afternoon that they hate coffe  so I sprinkled a bit around the bottom of the staging and its seemed to clear the few that were there but there wern't much and I'll check tommorow and see if they are still there.

They can be a mixed blessing biggest problem is they can carry in aphids to use them on your nice plants  like we use cows. well clever but a pain.

there is a spray you can buy from the vets that is typically used for fleas but you spray around the perimiter of the inside of the house around the skirting it is called acclaim and deters ants and such like for a ten year period it works outside too as i have used it that way too! it is top stuff its about 15 pounds a tin but goes a long way, worth the money i think! :D
