when can seedlings go in greenhouse?

every windowsill is cram packed at the moment!

I dont have autovents on so Im worried the temperature might be a little eratic.  I only got my greenhouse a few weeks ago - its all new to me!.

Also...  where would I get a piece of glass cut for a greenhouse, would a normal window company do it or would i need a specialist.

A up Pookey, all ly seedlings are in my greenhouse now, Unheated and they are surving and going great guns now with out any problems, as regards your glass, yes a glazing firm is ok, try and see if they have second recycled double glazing glass as this is cheaper, explain it just for your greenhouse.

Mine went out as soon as I could get them there !!  ...  (I have no heating - it's a lean-to on the house facing east).

I actually have an old fish tank out there into which I put a piece of soggy moisture matting and then my toms, chillis and aubs wet onto that.
I use clear plastic meat trays to create a mini-roof (instead of glass) ... and hey presto I have created a nice and muggy mico-culture

Works a treat ...

I get mine from the local 'normal' glass company. It's horticultural glass you need, it's cheaper than standard glass. It comes in standard sizes for greenhouses, when I have a 'whoopsy' and need a bit, it comes straight from stock, no cutting required.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

right.. hello I am confused as hell from the Boro..

I was told only a few days ago not to stick my toms/chillis in my unheated greenhouse just yet (even if I have a paraffin heater on when getting frosty)

I am now totally lost as to what to do :( :)

You'll probably get away with it as the weather is at the moment, but they won't grow as well as if they were in the real warmth. We could still have a cold snap and then, if you're not careful - curtains!!

Keep an eye on the forecast and make sure you have some horti fleece handy just in case.

My toms are still in the house, not too big, but growing nice & steadily & sturdily. Another 2 -3 weeks before they go into a heated greenhouse.

i reckon its still to early to put anything in unheated greenhouses because as this week has  proved there is a chance of frosty nights with clear skies . its supposedly rain for the rest of this week over eng sco wal .the weather is improving . now here in the suffolk  if you put seedlings out in a cold greenhouse they will get nipped off .......with frost.  if there is no frost and cloudy skies then its unusal for the temperature to drop below freezing. with an extra cover of plastic / glass etc like using the plastic food containers with lids on to raise seedlings .its basically double glazing ........ ok now  i dont or wont put anything out to sow until the end of this month minimum  i planted onion sets and shallots knowing that they are easily able to cope with the low night temps .....everybody here will have different ideas on when to sow or plant due to the differing weather and geography of where they live ....rule one if you live in the north you are 4 weeks behind the south   end of rules ......where does the nth start ? well draw a line from grimsby to blackpool that will do for now .now the hard bit ..... use your own intuiton

to remove the frost element in greenhouses you need to raise the temperature to above  5 c .they wont get nipped then
still alive /............

I'm a newbie on this board so Hello to all.   I have been growing stuff in a greenhouse for a few years now.  I live in Hampshire.  The temperature has been getting down to between 5 and 10 degrees C at night inside the greenhouse, with ground frost, so I won't leave my tomato, cucumber, aubergine, melon or pepper seedlings in there overnight in case they get too chilled (my greenhouse isn't heated).   If they get too chilled then they will take too long to recover again and you have lost any time advantage.   However I do leave my geranium, broad bean, marigold, various herbs, lettuce etc in because they seem to be able to cope with that slightly lower temperature.   So each night several trays with the most tender are transported into the warm once the light of the day is fading but placed back out into the greenhouse early the next morning so they don't get too leggy.    I keep a close eye on the Met office weather forecast.  The next few nights are due to be cloudy so the greenhouse temperature may stay higher than 10C.  If that's the case then the whole lot will stay in the greenhouse.   By contrast the last couple of days have seen some good sunshine in the South and I have needed to attach the shading because plants don't do too well above 85F.   Tomorrow it's due to be cloudy so the shading has been removed.    I also try to use tepid water to water the seedlings rather than the freezing water out of the water butt so I don't shock them (I don't know many people who enjoy a freezing cold shower).
From fork to fork

As many of you know, I'm totally new to greenhouse growing!  When it's getting a bit chilly at night, I've been putting my trays in propagators, the idea is to double glaze them - and put the paraffin heater on if it looks like frost.  They all seem to be growing quite well so far!
