Brassica's and eggshells????
« on: April 23, 2009, 15:11 »
I seem to recall last year on GW, Joe swift putting eggshells and other stuff into a trench for planting his brassica's. I have lovingly saved a lot of egg shells but now can't find anything on t'internet about planting with them in the ground.......am I going do-lally?

I've just tried "brassicas egg shells" in Google & got quite a few hits, either as an extra source of calcium or as a slug deterrent!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I must have clicked on all the ones for slug deterrants, ah so brassica's like calcium. My egg shells won't go to waste then

thanks

I remember seeing it in the Grow Your Own Veg series with Carol Klein where an amazing blind gentleman grew healthy brassica crops in a clubroot riddled plot.  He added the crushed eggshell to the potting mix to grow the plants on to produce a good root system before planting out  :)

Is calcium the same as lime? I was wondering because, when I put home made compost in my potato trenches, there was a lot of undigested eggshell still. I had a slight worry about it because I have a feeling you should avoid putting any lime where potatoes are going. Should I worry about it?

I wouldn't worry Rachael - lime can cause some scab on spuds but that doesn't make them inedible (put it this way, I'm still here  ::) )
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
