Use for crushed eggshells?
« on: March 24, 2010, 13:26 »
I have a ready supply of eggshells.(approx 15 doz per week)

I've read somewhere that they are good for adding to rosemary, as it needs the calcium.

Is this true, and on what other plants can I use it?

I stockpile crushed egg shell (although if it's not cooked I put in the oven for a while - makes it more crushable and removes any tiny risk of salmonella). When I plant out my toms, I put a layer of crushed egg shell and some small pieces of banana skin in underneath the plant. Using the logic that anything that works for my toms will also work for my courgettes, aubergines, chillies and peppers, I do the same for them. It might be an old wives tale but I heard about it years ago and have always done it. It's always been successful and it's a ritual - I like the thought that I'm doing some professional preparation of my soil for my plants - I don't normally

Now I'm going to have to try it in my rosemary  :)

I've been saving and crushing mine all winter and now have loads - I'm going to put it round my cabbages when i plant them out - it should deter the slugs a bit and I believe  brassicas also like a bit of calcium.

egg shalle are indeed a source of calcium. Just be careful with the the amounts of calcium you put in the soil - too much calcium can lead to antagonisms in the availability of potash.
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......
