Advice needed. Eye symptoms.
« on: April 22, 2009, 17:52 »
One of my chooks which i've had for 2 weeks has a sore eye  :(. I'm very worried it doesn;t look nice. She has what i can only discribe as 'bubbles' coming from her eye. Its not running just congealed.
She looks and acts normal otherwise.
This is the best photo i could get. ( it's difulcult taking a picture of an animal who moves like Max Headroom ::)

Please can somebody help.

Its most possibly an infection in the eye or mycoplasma. She will need antibiotics form the vet either way.

I'd say mycoplasma too !  Antibiotics needed from the vet.  I'd sugest treating all your bids as it's very infectious  :(

Clean out the coop well too !

Been to the vets. Suspects mycoplasma . I think that's what she said as i was still recovering from the 27 pound vet bill  Anyway she should be fine . Been prescribed Tiacil Sol (eye drops) and told to give to other hen if symptoms arise.
5 day course and don't touch eggs for a month.  >:(

I thought that's what it would be.

£27 is very reasonable I'd say, better than a flock of dead hens  ;)

Is your vet a farm or a small animal vet TGM ?  Farm vets tend to charge a bit differently.

Isn't your vet a nice young man called Will now I come to think of it TMG   ;) ::)

Do make sure and treat them all your flock with antibiotic or you will have to repeat the treatment. We will have to after our suspected mycoplasma. Chick picked it up in a shed even thought the big girls were kept out. It cost me €30 x2 time because of it.  :( :( My own fault though....

The Local Lab which is ran by the Dept of Agriculture here are coming out tomorrow to take blood samples from our hens to identify exactly what is the problem with them. Our Vet has swung it some how for us and they are do this test for free  :D :D and it also picks up on everything else that could be wrong. How brilliant is that.

There seems to be alot of Mycoplasma poping up on the forum of late.
Cheers,

Paula

It can be passed on to chicks via the egg :( So if you get hatching eggs from an infected flock the chances are it will then be passed on :(

Some people don't care they'll sell birds adult or chick even if they know they are not 100%

With that in mind, would you throw the eggs out from yesterday? or would you still eat them and only throw the ones out from when she started on medication?

From when they started the medication.

I think a month is a bit OTT.  My vet says 2 weeks for most antibiotics, but do take your vet's advice rather than mine !

Mycoplasma is present in a huge number of flocks unfortunatly (probably most flocks).  It's not a problem most of the time but stress such as moulting and other things can drop the chooks resistance and the mycoplasma can take a hold.

And there is also more then one type of Mycoplasm too and different strains respond to different treatments.

Spring and late fall are peak time for many diseases because of the wether, hot one day cold the next really taxes the bird's systems and causes stress. It is also migration time for wild birds which fly over and leave droppings for your birds to sort through and pick up illness from.

Our weather here has been extreme lately. Less then two weeks ago there was a hard freeze of 27 Deg. F. and in some parts of the state 27 inches of snow with howling winds that night. Today it was 94 deg. F. here and there will be much of the same till late Oct. Temps probably put more strain on birds then any other factor.
