Anyone planted peas or broad beans out yet ?
« on: April 20, 2009, 21:01 »
I have been hardening off my b beans and peas for a couple of weeks so I decided (still under fear slugs will wreck months of growing) to plant them out in the raised bed. I have just fleeced them overnight to be on the safe side. Is this overcautious ?

My broad beans were sown outside and have not needed any fleece on em. My peas are under fleece but that was to stop the mice digging up the seeds.

So my answer is... I dunno  Perhaps over cautious but can't see it doing any harm.

My broad beans and peas are outside here in the midlands. They are doing well. Yours should be OK after 2 weeks hardening off if you are near to me.

My broad beans have been in my raised beds for two weeks or more after a week of hardening off.  My peas also had a week and have been out for ten days.  No fleece, they're hard as nails.  Might consider fleecing the peas if there is a really hard frost.

In order to prevent the mice eating the seeds I grow them in tiny modules before planting out.  Not a viable idea for larger amounts though.

Put my beans out a couple of weeks ago, thriving here.  planted out two sets of peas today, some sown about 5 weeks ago and some about three weeks ago, grown in root trainers.  hoping they'll survive the frost tonight.  and sowed some peas direct as well but after last years mouse banquet I have sown almost double the recommended amount per foot to allow a slightly healthier looking row of peas at the end of it!

Blimey - all this messing about.

Straight in the soil, 10 days to germinate. Very few losses.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I did one lot of beans in paper pots in mid march, they went out last week and 2 rows straight in the ground at the beginning of April and those have already caught up with the early sown ones. So IMO it aint worth the hassle of sowing in pots.
DD as usual (when it comes to peas!) was right

I know what you meant!

I'll leave them like that, the weak will succumb to the stonger ones. They'll make their own space.
