Broad Beans Planted out
« on: October 17, 2008, 18:03 »
Today I planted out the Broad Beans I have been growing in modules indoors. For support I have collected twigs and branches that have been falling from the trees in the past few weeks.

I think your broad beans look rather thin and weak, probably due to being grown indoors in less that good light conditions and possibly too warm.  I think you'll need to protect them from the cold with some fleece if they are to survive  :!:

I'm not a broad bean expert, I don't like them, so I don't grow them. But I'm wondering if they look a bit spindly and do they need to be started inside, considering they're going to be out in far colder weather than this.

Were they hardened off before planting out?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Got to agree G
Can you fleece them if they havent hardened off? May have been a bit too early to start them off but I know what its like to be keen  :D

Good luck with em, but theres plenty of time to plant more

I don't have any fleece - all on the overwintering onions and garlic.

I'll cross my fingers and see what happens I have plenty more seeds anyway so I'll start some more indoors then start some in february for a later crop

If you've got any plastic bottles, cut the tops/bottoms off and stick those over the beans.

The onions and garlice don't need the fleece.....they need a bit of cold :)

Dont know if anyone else agrees but if the only reason you are not sowing direct is to avoid mouse and bird burglers, you could sow in modules at home but still leave outside.
I  always so my winter beans direct but the early one i tend to give a starter at home and transplant them very early.

Exactly. 8)  I enjoy it when we sometimes all agree.

But, as cruel as it sounds, they look spindly and aenamic to all of us - so far - I'd wait and see, they are hardy stuff and it's not that cold yet, here...

Could throw something over them for the colder nights for a while.

If they do not strengthen up, plenty of time to sow another lot outdoors.
