Thompson & Morgan Blight resistant Tatties
« on: March 26, 2007, 18:28 »
Has anyone tried this range before (mine were wiped out by blight last year)  Ive put the first early's in this week, (i am a little worried as they had only just started chitting), due to their late arrival from T&M, when I chased the order I relayed my worries of chitting and the sales person said, Ohhh people don't chit these days and these don't need to be.  Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this.  The tattie is called Orla.

A force to be reckoned with

Nah never tried em mate, if you get blight this year at the first sign immediately cut down all hulms to the ground an remove them and burn, don't dig up your tubers for 10 days and you should be OK to harvest after then. Blight spores don't live for to long on the ground.

No apologies for repeat posting.  This link suggests foliar feeding to combat blight organically.   http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/lateblight.html

Interesting post WG   :D  Thanx

Thanks and, incidentally, I agree with your cure should blight be present.  10 days minimum, 14-20 is better.

And, redwellies, I haven't tried Orla but there is no reason to disbelieve the claims.  Varieties do differ widely in their resistance to blight so Orla may well have the strongest resistance of all.   Yes, chitting is unnecessary.

Whilst chitting may not be necessary it has been suggested that it can increase yields in first earlies.
The force is strong in this one!
(As Organic as possible)

Late arrival from T&M
I to bought my spud seeds from T&M this year. They TOOK 6 WEEKS instead of the 5 DAYS as per the cat.  I Emailed and rang them a few times expressing my concern over losing chitting time.  Each time I got a different excuse for the delay.  In the end I tried to cancel but they would not let me telling me it was too late.  I tried to explain that it was their fault that it was too late and they hung up.  I will never buy from them again.  Now my tatties including Swift are still chitting because I know it is worth the delay because I will still get a bigger crop by chitting even if so late.  Monty Don did a test and the results were ,best yield chit First and Second Earlies But not main crop. :x

actually you can call them back and inform them they  broke the trading standards law in saying you can not cancel the order due to thier incompetance according to the 28 day rule and that you are contacting trading standards ,,,,,,,,,,give your name and address in full and make an official complaint to the managment not the sales team and dont be suprised if you do get a refund and an apology .. let them know that you are a member of a well known allotment growing website as well  worked for me when i ordered some austrian trailing geraniums

Thanks Munty I will give that a go.  I was really put out when the young lady told me that now days there is no need to chitt and they will be alright any way.  Let you know the outcome.  But what is the name of the well known club I belong to ? :(
