which direction to plant?
« on: April 14, 2009, 22:01 »
i have a 4 metre by 4o metre plot.
spuds, garlic and onions in rows along width (4 metre)
its north facing slope, but seems to get good sun

will it make a difference which way i plant my climbers eg runners, peas and beans, by this i mean - in rows like the other things going widthways or running up the plot - i was thinking about the shadow they will cast, and whether it will make a difference?

thanks
just keep breathing................

Hi Titch,

My allotment slopes down hill slightly and is East facing so all plants have to shape up or ship out.

Nothing as luxurious as a choice I'm afraid.

My way of thinking is that they either grow or they don't.

If they don't then they won't be invited back next year!!

My garden is north/south and I plant my runners using wigwams down the left hand side.  That way I don't have to worry about shadow.

They say that you should plant with rows running north/south so that both sides get sun.

Some crops such as lettuce like to be shaded a little.

My allotment is South facing and everyone except me seems to plant in rows E to W but my patch is divided into 3 North to South running beds each about 7ft wide and 45ft long with other beds for perennials such as fruit, rhubarb, asparagus, perennial broccoli, globe artichokes etc.  I have put runners North/South on a tent structure but this year have made four wigwams each with 9 canes as they only needed to be tied once!  Everything else is crop rotated over the three beds and runs north south.

FWIW I don't bother to tie my "Tents" - just place the canes at approximately the right angle to cross near their tops. Not as neat and tidy as if they were tied though ...

I'm thinking I might cross them lower down (half way?) this year to get more benefit from the beans hanging down for picking - sort of poor-man's-Munty-frame

I crossed my frames nearer the middle than the top last year, Kristen.  It worked very well, was far easier to pick those higher up (especially as I'm only small)  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Passing this one on to my daughter, who lost a small toddler in the bean tunnel last summer   She came out eventually  :D
