Which direction for veg rows
« on: February 15, 2022, 09:10 »
Hi Everyone
I have just taken over an allotment nice size with a falling down fruit cage. The plot lies in a North South direction with a hedge on the east side and the sheds etc on the south edge (allotment requirement).
My instinct is to make the veg rows run North and South so both sides get an almost even amount of sun during the day but I've seen an article by the RHS that shows rows laid East and West.
So which is correct or more importantly which will give the greater yields.
Thanks

I've never noticed any difference in growth from row direction tbh
On my last plot the long beds were already South/North, so I just carried on growing  in those; and the long beds on the one I took over a few years ago were East/West.
The only thing I've always done is to be selective in what crops are planted in any deep shade cast by a shed, tall fruit bushes/trees/hedges. I now also take note of where the strongest winds came from, so my bean frames are built sideways on to the strongest gusts. I learnt that the hard way when the first one here got flattened  ::)
Good luck with your plot, whichever direction you plant it.

Just one thing to add to the above post, is that if you grow them East-West, don't put your tallest plants in the row which is nearest the sun - or it will completely shade out a much smaller row immediately behind it
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you have full sun all day, go with a North/South planting. That’s the best way to get sun all over the plant.

But in all fairness, use your common sense and see how other plants would shade each other, and go from there.

Have fun!
