Which Tomato food / fertiliser?
« on: April 13, 2009, 15:09 »
I've always used Tomorite, but out shopping recently Doff was much cheaper, and I heard good things about it last season, so I'm giving that a try.

I thought I'd have a trawl for prices generally and came up with this:

Suttons Tomato Superfeed says a 750g pack will make 900 litres of liquid superfeed and contains NPK 10:10:24 plus magnesium, calcium, trace elements & seaweed extract - cost is £6.95

I've got 2.5 Litres of Doff Tomato Feed here, makes 1,162 Litres of feed (15ml / 7L). NPK = 5:5:10 with "magnesium and added trace elements (not listed)" £4.99 (from Amazon)

Tomorite 2.5 Litres is £13.25 @ Amazon. NPK = 4:4.5:8 makes 562 Litres (20ml / 4.5L) (Recommended 4.5L per grow-bag once, / twice a week)

I don't know what the comparison is - compare the NPK (Suttons has twice as much as Doff, which has a bit more than Tomorite), or compare the made-up-solution volume (Doff has 29% more than Suttons and twice as much as Tomorite) ... and then divide by the price??

Either way, Doff looks to be good value for money! I just hope it works ... ;)

Sheep poo, tied in a leg from a pair of old tights & dumped in a bucket is cheaper!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Me old Grandad swore by it.

Mrs Digger swore at it and it's banned!

Sounds like I will be using duck poo.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hi, Doff i thought Homer Simpson drank that!! doh! it's Duff.
On a serious note comfrey juice is rich in potash, ideal for toms.

You guys are TOO much. I've got to MAKE my own Tomato Fertilizer now?  This stuff in a bottle is all carefully controlled, exactly balanced, and will grow me TONS of Tomatoes. It said so on the advert ... <THUD!>

But seriously, lots of/most people will use bottle-fertilizer, rather than liquid manure variants, won't they?

yeah they do it's very convenient and smells an awful lot less  ;)

I use wilko's own and seaweed extract on mine.  I do the comfrey thing too but get told off about the smell.

I still have an unopened bag of veg fertilizer I bought about 4 years ago. You can see what a deal that was  :D The pigeon poo from my racing flock and the chicken poo from my neighbour are free and plentiful, and I'm the only one in the garden so there are no complaints about smells. I suppose I should re-post my pix of my tom crops which were huge and plentiful without any exact measurements. Sometimes people can overthink something simple and basic.

For me its convenience, mostly.

We have two chickens that roam freely in the garden - bit hard to convert their poo into Tomato food!

Beyond that I have a couple of trailer loads of farmyard manure once a year ...

... so I'm a bit lacking in ingredients.

But I was a bit staggered at the variation in price of the Branded products, hence my post.
