Kelvedon wonder
« on: April 10, 2009, 11:28 »
Ive got some Kelvedon wonder peas that i am going to sow in some paper pots later but was just wondering how tall they grow?
I was going to have a go at doing a munty frame for them in one of my raised beds in the garden and underplant with some radish and lettuce but maybe they would be better on my allotment with a wire/mesh fence type thing?
Any suggestions?
Thanks Lucyx
Ps if i do a munty frame do the taller poles need to be at the south or north end?

Off the top of my head they grow to about 3ft. They dont need a munty frame..they dont 'climb' as such, they have tendrils that reach out and cling, so the mesh type fencing would be better than a munty frame

Have a look at DDs picture on this thread, its the perfect way to do it

I find Kelvedon Wonder to be small: not normally more than 18".

I can assure you that these grew to more than 18"!

It's about 18" to the top string and they haven't finished yet.

I suppose it depends on your soil.
Hi-jacking the thread for a minute (aplogies Exbattmad) what sort of soil do they prefer
DD?

Mine's quite light & stone free, but generally they'll go in most soils. They don't take a lot out of the ground, but put nitrogen in, when you dig in their nodules at the end of the season.

It is mid April and the soil is warm. Why are you sowing them in pots? They will be better straight in the ground with no disturbance at transplanting.

Mine went straight in the ground a few weeks ago, mainly cos DD said "I sow mid March and mid April to avoid" .... urm, some bug or summat ... and I listened to the "Pea God" :D

Mine's quite light & stone free, but generally they'll go in most soils.

Mine have a choice of heavy, relatively unimproved clay, or totally light, infertile, dry raised-beds, so it figures they may be well below their potential!  I'm working on digging muck into both areas (while maintaining the small area of good loam already in existence), but it's taking a lot.
