Pumpkin on the roof of my shed.
« on: April 06, 2009, 23:09 »
I have a small garden and was thinking of growing pumpkins on my shed roof.  Should be loads of sun up there but I'm not sure how wide or deep a pot I should use, or if it's even a viable proposition.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Variety is Hundredweight (from BnQ)

You'd need a damn big pot and mountaineering abilities to keep it well watered!

The roof would need to be re-inforced if growing that variety sucessfully as weall!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I suppose you could have the root in the ground and train it up there if it is a trailing variety, as then the fruits would be dry and in the sun -- I've seen farmers do this in Malta, where they grow what looked like Crown Prince

As Rich said it would require a reinforced roof

This article is on a slightly different topic - green roofs - but interesting anyway

Agree with Sunshineband. Roots in the ground and trail up onto the roof - should avoid slug damage too. Father's neighbour in Portugal does this too.

I saw a program once where this lady was training her pumpkin into a nice and tight circle, that may be an idea for you.
From last years first experience i was amazed at just how big they grow, the plant i grew was over 10 foot long, and when it had finished, i was amazed at the weight of just the plant!
bear in mind that you need axcess for watering, and even polination of flowers.

I was always told to grow them from your compost heap, as they love all the neutrients.

Found this good diagram when i was researching green roof's

OR... maybe you could attach a large window box or hanging basket to the side of the shed to grow the plant in and then train it over the roof? (So any fruit can sit on the roof)

What a great idea - using the space on the roof
I think I might be tempted to go for something that wouldn't get so big - how about some salad leaf, lettuce etc? Could even do them in pots. Out of the way of bunnies, deer etc and surely only the most adventurous slugs.

You've got me thinking...

OOO!  I quite fancy making a green roof for my shed too after seeing those diagrams!

I think I'd sow wildflowers up there to attract the bees and butterflies and so I don't break my neck harvesting anything!!

As you liked the picture, this one is good for garages and lean-toos

training tomatos are always goos to put around the side of the roof, so you can just walk passed and pick them at your leasure!

i would have thought that squashes would be ok on the roof, its just a question of how big the fruit are to support!

Not quite the same, but last year my lottie neighbour grew squashes up a giant (3metre square) pallet that was fixed to the side of his shed. The plants were in the ground and grew up a 60+ degree slope, and onto the shed roof, with the pallet slats holding the fruit in place. That way he could grow squashes in a bed only 1.5 metres from the shed, and have another veg row right next to it.
