Whilst driving through Kent 8 years ago I saw some advertised on the side of the road by a hop grower and have since regretted that I didn't pull in. Might be an idea to do a search for hop growers and contact them directly, then plan a trip to the 'garden of England'. The fresh shoots are delicious but the 'bines' grow really tall and I think that they'd look great trained along wires up a south-facing house wall.

Cheers for that guys,

After a bit of research i may try a giant version of muntys bean frame to grow the hops up, sounds like a plan to me.
I'm surprised that there arent more places to buy from tbh, i thought that real ale was the new cool!

i looked at the link you sent p00rstudent, and it would be about £17 for one rhyzome! pretty hefty if you ask me, i'll have an ask about to see what i can find thats a bit cheaper!

wild hops £8.81 at naturescape: http://www.naturescape.co.uk/acatalog/climbers_roses.html

it's pot luck if you get a female plant though. they don't know the sex of the immature plants. the female is the one with the hops on.

this may sound a stupid question, but if i take a cutting from a female plant, its going to be female yeh?
I may have to try and get some cuttings from somewhere, cheers for the link though, i'll have a look now!

The hops arrived on Thursday Morning (i Thing it was), but due to me being ill, ive just put the roots into some large teracota pots with soil for the moment. I guess it cant harm them. They can stay there until i decide where i can grow them - possibly horrizontally in the main on a wire!?!

I've got a golden hop, very decorative but rarely produces hops!

If you can find anyone with a hop plant the shoots can be pulled off now ( irishmans cuttings ) to make new plants but you have to be quick as they are already sprouting and grow rapidly
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

these irishman's cuttings; do you need to take a but of root up with the cuttings too?

Just the very base of the stem will work although that sometimes includes a tiny bit of root - it's not the same as a division with a chunk of the whole plant - but that would work if you had a vigorous stock plant
