Growing hops!
« on: December 23, 2008, 13:29 »
Hi there.

Received my seeds for next season; happened to see hop seeds for sale so I got some of those too. They sound slightly unpredictable in germination.

What is the best way to germinate/grow and nurture them?
ATB.

Don't know about germinating, but I had loads of hops off a golden hop that simply scrambled up and along a six foot panel fence. :D
Commercially I think they are grown on an arrangement of wires and posts, a bit like for raspberries.

edit: Oh and hack them down in late autumn, when the leaves are gone or at least dry. They will still grow yards next summer.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I'd try rubbing the seeds over sand paper first to remove some of the seed coat this may help.  :D
