Hispi cabbage
« on: April 03, 2009, 16:08 »
I have grown some pointed cabbage which I think is known as hispi type.  It says traditional german sauerkraut variety large pointed heads can weigh up to 10lbs (we shall see if that is true half that probably).   Variety johnsons world kitchen Cabbage Filderkraut!

Anyway running out of room what size container do you reckon I will need.  Can get loads of the Blue tesco mushroom boxes they chuck away.

Hispi is a fairly small sort; the big pointed ones need a couple of feet final spacing.  You can start them off like any other brassica - mine (not the same sort, but a similar late-summer harvesting cabbage) are in 40 module trays to save pricking out, and will then go into 3" pots before finally going out in the garden in another month or so.

IMO you'd be lucky to grow 1 cabbage per mushroom tray....those big cabbages make quite a big root ball and they should be planted about 18/24in apart for big cabbage. I think planting 2 together and they would really struggle :(

Knickers reckon they aren't hispi then I assumed all the pointed ones were.  Oh well only germinated 12.  I'll think of something.

Yeah just googled they are big.
