That looks lovely.  You can start eating them now if you wnat to but as the weater gets colder they should stand in the ground.

Standing in the ground means to leave them in the ground until your ready to use them. Hispi cabbage tend to deteriorate as the weather declines so don't leave them too long. A lot of people have had problems this year with Hispi cabbage bursting which seems to have been caused by the abnormal weather.

Some crops won't stand in the ground as they don't like the colder and wetter weather.

Yours look good.

Get it eaten now  :)  They are lovely and so easy to grow. I do them all year round as I'm an addict  :)  I like them as they're so compact and one is enough for a meal for two of us.  I like Minicoles too but they can get really big  :)  Advantage is another cabbage that can be grown all year.  Which reminds me I need to sow some more

Hispis are grand. I grow them all year round.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

My Hispis burst (oo er, missus) and I found lots of earwigs in them. Yuk !

Is the Hispi variety particularly prone to bursting above other varieties? Certainly other varieties haven't done that this year for me whilst the Hispis have.
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

If you dont take soon you will have several well past their best in a few weeks. You probably already know this but if you leave roots in ground and cut across the end of the stalk left when the cabbage head is cut off and if conditions favourable you will get some more leaves growing - quite small but very tasty and this helps to push the growing season out a little provided you do not need the ground for anything else.
Enjoy

Hispi is a Rick Stein favourite, he describes it as a sweet cabbage.  I think it's a little beauty and because they grow so readily and so close together you can't fail  :)
