Thin rhubarb - any ideas
« on: April 01, 2009, 17:35 »
Hi

Been down to the plot today and took a look at the rhubarb.  We have 5 crowns all of which were in the plot when we took it over so have no idea how old they are.

Two of the 5 crowns seem to be producing really skinny sticks - the crowns have been fed well (fresh manure) but these two are looking totally different to the others.

Any ideas - do we need to dig them up and get rid of them and buy some new ones so we know the age and look to splitting them in a few years?  Any ideas would be a great help

Thanks very much

Hmm while you're (we're ;) )waiting for an answer from someone with more experience, two possible reasons come to mind, either they are newly planted offsets/cuttings or the crown is so old and manky that is has only weak shoots, either because it's nearly dead or because it's got more shoots than it can develop properly. A poke around them should reveal how big they are without doing much harm.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Might sound obvious but are they a different sort?

Hi

We don't know what kind of rhubarb any of them are as they were there when we took the plot over - however last year the 2 "duff" crowns produced some of the biggest and best rhubarb we had.  Mind you thinking about it they did get thinner at the end of it's growing season.

Cheers

Did you leave enough of the leaves for it to recharge its batteries and be able to come good again this year? If you cut most of them off it might be feeling a bit weak this year.

That's classic for a clump that got over-picked last year: you need to ease back on the picking through the summer so that the crown has a chance to grow.  If it wasn't that (or if nothing else damaged the leaves last summer), then disease or overcrowding is a possibility.

It's generally recommended that rhubarb picking stop at the end of June so that the plants can recover and nourish themselves for the next season. It's tempting to keep picking but it does the plant no good.
Overall it sounds like a good idea if you dig up the clumps, check for any root damage (there will be some crown rot in places where it's oldest), divide the crowns if they seem huge, and really clean out and feed the new potting holes. Lots of manure, a handful of bonemeal and a good watering - and no picking at all this year. Next year you should be fine to start picking again but only until the end of June.

Have you checked for crown rot?

Cheers guys

Looks like I need to check for crown rot and depending on condition either split or replace - yet another job for the other half I cannot dig at the mo - baby due in 7 weeks - rather too fat and worn out for too much hard work - yes I hear you any excuse!! :nowink:

cheers
