rabbit and chickens??
« on: March 25, 2009, 19:25 »
I am getting a rabbit shortly and I was wandering could I put the rabbit in the same pen as my chickens, I have 2 pekin hens and a rooster? I would be having the rabbit hutch on the ground with the hope that the chickens won't go into it especially at night time as there hutch is up off the ground.

I would not want to risk the rabbit getting hurt by constant pecking or anything like it, the only other place I have for the rabbit is in the other part of my garden where my dog would be throughout most of the day.

I've had rabbits in with chickens and ducks and never had a problem :)
The hens sometimes went in the rabbit hutch to lay, and if they can get inthe rabbit will go in the coop and poop in a courner

The bunny will get an odd peck but he'll soon learn, my Bonkers used to run round and round the rabbit's in an attempt to annoy them (well that's what it looked like ) but I never had any major problems :)

Make sure bunny get's lice & mite treated though:)

I put enough 250mm wire around my chicken run that was buried deep enough to have thwarted a fox. I bought 4 New Zealand bunnies to put in my 15x15 chicken run with my rooster and two hens. They all escaped right away through a very small opening. I closed that up and they were doing great.

But when it is time to make more bunnies, they dig a nest - five feet underground (a burrow, not a hole straight down). Well they dug out and got away.

But they always got along well with the chickens, except that they disturbed my hen by walking over the eggs when she went broody and she fell out of the mood to brood.

Hi Make sure your rabbit is treated for cocci though as they suffer from this illness aswell as chickens and can die a terrible death from it!

The only thing I can add is I am sure they would get on, but just watch the eyes of your rabbit won't get pecked! expensive operation to have an eye removed as if they get infected rabbits tend to get awful absesses! :tongue2:

Thank you so much for all the advice, just got the rabbit this evening, all I know is that its black with floppy ears and it seems very nervous. I went to lift it and it kicked like mad so I hope it will get used to us.

I will probably put it in with the chickens in the next few days but I would need to put heavy stones around the edge of the run to prevent it getting out in the meantime. Could anyone please advise me on as to where I can get the treatments listed for my rabbit and chickens??

Thanks again for the great advice. ;)

Hi Again,

I have been breeding and showing rabbits for 29 years now since I was seven years old so I hope I can give you some worth while advice on your new bunny!  :D

What age is your new rabbit? is it a baby or an adult as a baby should not kick like that if it has been socialised properly!  :(

It sounds like you have a Dwarf or Mini Lop both can be a little skittish if not well handled and usally doe's (female) can be slightly more so than a Buck (male).

I use Cider Apple Vinager on both my rabbits and my chickens which has anti cocci properties and is a harmless remedy, but rabbit pellets (for bunny only) which contain anti cocci or liquid that can be added to drinking water can be used and purchased through poultry sights (although it would be best to contact your vet for quantities and what is best to use for your rabbit). I dont let my chickens and rabbits mix so only use the Cider Apple Vinager.

I hope your bunny settles ok!

Regards Trina  :)

Thanks Trina. I was told it was about 2 and a half years old. The people I got it off said it loves being petted but not lifted as it kicks out so I am hoping that it is just nervous and will take a bit to get used to us. As soon as we hold it she or he just chills while we pet it but its still early days yet.

Apparently their next door neighbours cat came in now and again and played with the rabbit. The food I have for it is Wagg optium rabbit food and tonight it ate a full carrot so any suggestions on feeding would be very much appreciated. The only pets I ever had were dogs and goldfish but now as I am a bit older I have really taken an interest in animals and I want the best for any animal I have. In the near future I am hoping to get a pot bellied pig. :)

Thanks for the info, oh and btw as its pure black I have named it snowy. :D

Hi Again!

Like the name! if you can lift your bunny up (I usally wrap them in a towel like a sausage with the bum sticking out the end if they are a little skittish!)  you will be able to tell the sex at this age as the bucks testicals are visable and will be like 2 pink peanuts either side of his vent (sometimes in cold weather they retract them a bit ) but with a doe you will only see skin. Does will also normally have a due lap which is a double chin in normal language.

If the bunny is eating this type of food then great as it stops selective feeding (ie them picking out the best bits and leaving the rest!). Mine are a bit more fussy and I feed a mix but they do get carrot, cauliflower, broccoli Chicory is a really good conditioner (all in moderation) and stale brown bread that has been slowly baked in the oven till really hard they love that! sometimes digestives and weetabix (dry) as a treat! NEVER EVER lettice as it can be poisonous to rabbits! and cabbage can make them smell!!

Vaccinations are a good idea for Mixxi and VHD which are both killer diseases but vets do vary alot with prices so shop around as some are unfortunately very over priced.

A good site for rabbits is the British Rabbit Council (which I belong to and have to to show my rabbits) the addy is www.thebrc.org they have info and pictures of various breeds etc........

I hope this helps

Trina  :)

I have kept rabbits and chickens for a number of years,
Rabbits like chicken feed! and hens like to lay in rabbit hutches.
They all get to roam free range in my rabbit proof back garden and seem to get on fine, it looks lovely at this time of the year with bunnies and chickens amongst the daffs.

Hi I have not got any experiences with pigs im afraid  if they have a big area to get away from each other and the rabbit/chickens dont get too muddy as the pig will like mud to keep cool then I cant really see a problem ???

Sorry I could not help too much on this one  :)

No problem Trina. Apparently these pigs are clean and many people keep them as pets as they can be house trained etc.  ???
