deformed eggs
« on: March 16, 2009, 21:11 »
Hello All,
I am new to forums so bear with me! I was wondering if anyone could advise on what is causing my young silkie hen to lay wierd eggs? She will be one year old this  year and she started laying normal eggs in the autumn. She has recently been laying 'eggs' which are not egg shaped, they are sometimes egg coloured but are smaller than a 2p coin and are irregular shaped, with bulges. its really hard to describe them actually, they just look nothing like an egg! She is free range with plenty of grit, my other 2 hens lay just fine. One day she laid a complete egg on the path with no shell at all. She appears otherwise healthy. Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Pickney

Welcome to the Hen House :D

Sounds a bit like your describing a lash?

Hello Sarah,
Thanks for the swift reply. Yes, it does look like that but usually a bit more strangely shaped.  What do you think the problem is?

Have to say I've never had one :)

Muntjac gives a great explanation in the second post down in this link

I'm afraid having read through it myself, if she's laying these all the time it seems she may not lay again :(

Thanks for the advice, it doesn't look good does it. I'll keep an eye on her but even if she doesn't lay again she has a home for life. It's a shame as she got off to such a good start with her laying. I wonder if it could have been brought on by stress as she used to lay eggs in the sleeping quarters until we started shutting the door during the day. Then she had to get used to going into the nesting box, which she did eventually after much complaining!

I wonder if she may have an infection or permanent problem with her oviduct. Could even be a tumor but don't panic if she seems otherwise healthy.

A vet may be able to advise but without any other symptoms, it may just be a waste of money.
I'm pleased you're happy to have her with or without eggs.  :)
She may start again one day as if nothing happened. ::)
