Possible to grow spider plants from roots?
« on: March 14, 2009, 14:25 »
Hi.

I repotted some spider plants and took off some of the (water filled torpedo shaped ) roots.

If I plant these roots, are they likely to sprout into new spider plants?

Looks like nobody has done it as they are so easy to grow from the spiders! Try and see, we would be interested to know.

It would be interesting to know about growing from the roots.

We planted a spider plant in a sheltered spot under our living room window where it gets early morning sun throughout the year (when it's sunny!).

The same plant has been there for about five years or more surviving frosts and snow. Leaves die back completely but it reappears in late spring. Before this I'd always thought they were an indoor plant!  ;)

I imagine that large plants can be split as they tend to form new plantlets as the mother plant grows larger. I think the largish white blobs on the roots are just that - enlarged roots used as water or nutrient storage vessels. Probably wrong  ::)
