Cowslips in the fridge

Bought some cowslip seeds and the instructions said either plant in the autumn and let the seed overwinter, or plant now after a three-week spell in a small pot in the fridge. I've done the latter. Anyone had any success with this approach?

Hi Scribbler,

I've not done this with cowslips but breaking the dormancy of certain seed varieties with cold is accepted practice, it just basically mimics (in a shorter time period) what would happen to a seed if it was out in the wild being exposed to frosts/weather over winter.

I reckon your cowslips should germinate just fine

Yup, had to do this with my campanula for the rockery.
Grew just fine after the spell in the fridge

Hi

I collected seeds from a Geranium Phaeum last year and done a google for info.

Found a great site, the man said to sow them, then leave them in the fridge to germinate, but !!!!!!!!! Only prick out those that germinate, leaving the rest in the fridge.

They were nestling in there for months, keeping the beers company
