Feed from strawberry cuttings
« on: March 11, 2009, 22:11 »
I have a bucket I kept rotten strawberries and strawberry leave cut off in.  It filled with rain water and tap water as I forgot to put lid on it.  The water is now a rich brown ..........would this be okay to use as a feed.  It only has strawberry cuts and some strawberry fruit in it or will this be too acidic.

You could use but don't be surprised to find strawberry plants popping up everywhere. When I have any nasty berries, I throw them back onto the strawberry patch where they'll sow themselves and give me more plants.

Add it to your compost heap.

I am ashamed to admit I haven't got around to having a compost heap yet, worried about smell as the garden surrounds the bungalow so it wouldn't be far from the house.  In other words the garden isn't long and distant from the bungalow.

I don't think it will have much in the way of nutrients, and the rotting strawberries will have fermented to produce a fairly acidic solution (like vineger). Probably best to pour the liquid down the drain and put the rest in your green bin. It will be soimilar to the water you get in bogland and that's generally not a very productive environment.

Strawberry seeds are pretty hardy, almost like tom seeds, so the chances of new plants from them is pretty good even with your 'brew' Sheila. Disperse the liquid evenly through the garden so there's no buildup on one spot and you'll be okay. It's no worse than making manure tea except your brew is far less potent.
And, a properly made compost pile won't stink.
