peas
« on: March 07, 2009, 21:52 »
Hi all.

Will peas benefit from a trench with veg / salad waste, or is that just broad beans?

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

Richard

No, not really, why make work for yourself.  Peas prefer a well manured soil like beans do, but a trench is beyond the call of duty.
Cheese makes everything better.

I built my Pea climbing frame today  :) Am getting quite excited about my pea growing now.

As never grow peas before any hints and tips no matter how basic would be very welcome everyone  :) :) :) :) :) :)
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

mice will dig them up and eat them - i always start mine off in root trainers or polystyrene cups. When they go in i make sure they have protection from pigeons.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

NO NOT TOO LATE AT ALL. I did plant some sugar snaps (mange tout) yesterday but i will be doing more in about a months time and maybe some later than that. I like to try and get several different patches going all at different stages so that you can continually pick them for as long as possible.

Hi RichardC.

If you have a greenhouse and a length of guttering this is good way to start them off.
Keeps the pests away as peas can get attacked by mice, slugs, birds etc..
Once the peas have reached a couple of inch, you can transfer to your plot, just slide them all off the guttering straight into the ground.   :D

I really wanted to grow some peas this year (in my new house!) but next door's garden is a pigeon paradise!  Do I have any chance of getting a crop?  Also what other veg are they found of?

As long as the slugs and mice can't get in will be fine.  :)

Can peas be started off in seed trays, or do they need root trainers?
