The other thing is to let the tuber start shooting in a large pot in the green-house, then take lots of cuttings.  By the time it's warm enough to plant them out, they'll be doing nicely (unless you're like me and have a 0% success rate with cuttings of any kind!).

Hi,
some dahlias seem to make huge clumps which can be split into many pieces even 10, other varieties much less so. All need a shoot as well as the tuber in order to grow .
Also its impotant to check out varieties, some much better as cut flowers than others, heights range from 12 in to 6ft and flower size from tiny pom-poms to huge 'dinner plates'
depends what you want but great to see a few flowers on the plots
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I'm growing mine at the moment by seed, as my next-door-neighbour on the allotment grew them from seed last year, and they were spectacular.  I've got mine in the conservatory at the moment and are coming up nicely.

If they were planted fairly deep dahlia tubers will survive the 'average' winter of recent years and grow away again as it warms up in spring.

However this year we had a more severe winter with frosts sustained for many days so it may been that tubers left in the grown will have frozen and turned to mush.

The old gardening books ( Percy Thrower et al) used to tell us to lift and dry the tubers, turning upside down to drain the water out of the hollow stems then store in dry peat in a cool but frost free place before replanting in may or bringing into a heated greenhouse in march to produce early growth for cuttings. I must say its an awful lot easier to leave in the ground!

You could try gently digging down to look at the tubers, they should be firm and solid but doubt there will be any shoots yet. If soft, sqidgy or smelly they have been frosted.
