How soon can I tell if chicks are boys or girls, please?

I think it'll depend on the breed, some you can tell sooner than others

If they are buff orps then you could have a long wait in my opinion

These are what was described as 'mongrel sorts' like Hugh FWStall has. Not sure what that might mean in tersm of sexing them.

Unless they are an auto sexing breed it is not easy to tell which is male or female.  First you will need to tell us what breed they are.  Photos of the parents may help.

That's why I'm hatching cream legbars (autosexing breed) this time!  Oh and the blue eggs

No photos of parents but I do know that they are very mixed up sorts ie mongrel chickens so that probably wouldn't help. Have to resign myself to sending them all back to the farm at the end of next week  as we cannot keep cockerels.
Never mind, next time I can foray into chooks I shall try to have a breed that can be sexed by chick colour (I didn't even know about this until yesterday when I was just browsing to see what else I could find out that was interesting for the kids at school to know)
